CIA Night Ops Custom Details

12-inch Figure: DML Ranger Larry Nash.

Three Hole Balaclava: Custom Made from black stretch fabric.

Tactical Goggles: From 21st Century Toys Scud Hunter figure. Removed plastic buckle.

Night Vision Binocular Rig: Modified from a pair of bbi Night Ops SEAL "Owl" NVG monocular. A second tube was added to the left side of the IR illuminator housing. Please click here to see my NVG tutorial: Modifying The bbi NVG Monocular

Radio Headset: Custom made using misc. black nylon, elastic webbing, black bbi buttons and Fabri-Tac. The boom mic is made from an electric guitar string painted black. The mic diaphragm is hole punched from a plastic DML Navy SEAL gloved hand. A small hole was made in it to attach onto the mic boom. Then it was also painted black with flat acrylic paint. The small-coiled wire coming from the headsets earphone is a piece of 28-gauge PVC coated solid core wire. It was coiled into shape by winding the wire around a thin and straighten out paper clip. The bbi push switch's button was painted OD. Between the push switch and radio is a piece of 26-gauge solid core/PVC wire. The wire attachments are all made with miniature sections of heat shrink tubing. The DML Motorola Radio is located in a small vest pouch on the left side of the LBV. The horizontal pouch was removed from the upper right of the vest and secured to the open loops on the vest under the left arm.

BDU's: bbi EF SWAT Team "Barret". The chest pockets were relocated to the upper arms and the shirt is tucked into the pants. Not seen is a narrow elastic belt to hold the pants tight. Also, the pants have belt loops that worked nice for this purpose.

Body Armor: bbi Night Ops SEAL armor vest modified by removing one of the Velcro waist panels for a more streamed lined fit. Also the silver hardware on the shoulder straps was painted black.

SOE CQB Vest: bbi Green Beret's "Eagle/Rogue" modified by painting the OD nylon fabric black with acrylic paint. Replaced the fastex buckles on the front and upper rear with DKY upgrade buckles that have a bit more streamed line look. Added two tri-glide buckles to the shoulder adjustment straps in front. Also added extra bbi black webbing and buttons for holding the knife under the left shoulder's utility loops.

Knife: DML Delta Force "Leo". Handle painted flat black. The sheath is from bbi EF SEAL "Shark" and was modified by removing the web belt strap and painted flat black. A snap thumb break was made out of 1/8th webbing and a bbi button.

Shotgun Shell Holder: Made using DML Shot shells from GSU Weapons Set and the side-car shot shell mount off of a bbi EF SWAT Team "Barret" Die Cast Shotgun. Black 1/4" webbing was glued to the plastic shell mount and a small amount of black elastic string was wound between the shells for no other reason than it looked kinda cool. :) The shot-shells attach to the vest with a piece of hook sided Velcro that was glued to the shell mount with "3M Super Adhesive" ...... Awesome glue for just about everything onesixth.

Black Nylon Rucksack: bbi EF Delta Force "Striker". Modified by adding a top handle, webbing and fastex buckles, and additional fastex buckles to allow it to attach to the rear SOE vest. The SOE had four female fastex buckles, so this worked out really nice. A section of scale black elastic string as a utility rope was coiled up and was strapped to the ruck with a custom strap made of webbing, a fastex and two tri-glide buckles. This strap feeds through the side loops on the ruck. The rope is also fastened at the top to the drag handle by a bbi carabineer painted black and dry brushed using silver acrylic paint.

Black Web Duty Belt: bbi 3/8" black webbing and medium DKY fastex upgrade buckle.

Triple Pistol Mag Pouch: From a bbi EF Navy SEAL "Shark" Engineering Sample figure. Early production run's back in 2000 of this bbi figure had a black triple MP-5 mag pouch. In later production versions the color was switched to woodland camo with OD straps. This black version was modified to fit M9 pistol Mags by pulling the web straps down covering the pouches and adding black 1/8" webbing and mini DKY helmet fastex buckles.

Flash Bang Drop-Down Pouch: bbi EF Force Recon "Sniper". Customized by adding DKY mini fastex buckles and 1/8" webbing.

Small Multi-Tool Pouch: Attaches to the left leg Flash Bang strap. Custom made from a flap off of a 21st Century Toys SWAT cloth vest. Added a bit of 1/8" webbing on the flap.

Zip Tie Restraints: mini 3" zip ties with the tips trimmed and thread in reverse for a quick release posture. Attached to the vest's side utility loop with a single zip tie.

Cloth Gasmask Bag: bbi Night Ops SEAL "Owl" molded gasmask bag. This originally was a molded OD piece with an opening lid. It was customized by first removing the molded lid and belt loops. The lower portion of the bag was cover by gluing black polyester/nylon fabric directly onto the molded rubber using 3M Super Adhesive (fabri-tac tends not to stick rubber/plastic as well as the 3M Super Adhesive does). The top cover is made completely of this black poly/nylon fabric using fabri-tac, no stitching. The bag was finished off with 1/4" bbi webbing, a DKY fastex buckle, and a DML Tri-glide to hold down the slack web strap. A new belt loop was made from 3/8" webbing.

Square Utility Pouch: DML OD molded first-aid kit from Delta Force "Leo". Using similar method as the cloth covered gasmask bag this molded piece was covered in fabric with one exception. Since the first-aid kit is a solid piece it was only used as a 3D pattern shape around which the fabric was wrapped. The seams were glued and once the desired shape was acquired the molded pouch was removed leaving a functioning pouch with a closing lid. Webbing was also glued around the edges and a mini DKY fastex was added with 1/8" bbi webbing. The pouch attaches to the belt with a web loop.

Night Vision Goggle Case: Custom made with black poly/nylon fabric and webbing. This was just glued together with fabri-tac. It was formed into a tube shape. Half of the tube was glued flat and folded back over the pouch portion to make the cover flap and trimmed the square edges round. The pouch is basically one piece of cloth. It was finished off with webbing and DKY mini fastex buckle.

Coiled Pistol Lanyard: Custom made from 26 gauge solid core, PVC coated wire. To form the coiled shape of the wire it was tightly wound around a straight paper clip. The coil is attached to a die-cast bbi carabineer painted black and hooked to the web belt. The coil also attaches to the pistol with black die cast hooks from a bbi F-18 pilot vest cut to shape (using only the loop part), black string from a bbi Owl NVG's, black 1/8" webbing and small heat shrink tubing.

Cloth Holster & Pistols: The Special Operation Equipment Inc. (S.O.E.) styled holster is custom made from poly/nylon fabric with misc. black webbing. A custom pattern was created for the size of the die-cast bbi M9 pistol using a business card stock. Once the holsters basic shape was cut, the grid stitch pattern added. The remaining bbi webbing details were glued on using fabri-tac. The DKY medium buckle is used for drop-down strap, small size for the leg straps with Intoyz two Tri-Glides, and a mini size on the mag pouch strap. The second bbi M9 pistol is located in the vest left ammo pouch.

Repelling Harness: bbi PJ "Bones". Painted silver buckles black.

Knee & Elbow Pads: The elbow pads are bbi with elastic straps added. The kneepads are customized from a pair DML knee pad cups and the cloth knee pads from Jakks Pacific 12" Triple-H figure. After cutting the cups out they are glued on top of the cloth pads with 3M Super Adhesive.

Black Gloved Hands: bbi "Assassin" figure with G3 version wrist pins to fit DML Larry wrists. These softer plastic gloves have been modified by inserting a piece of metal paper clip in each of the hands forefinger lending some control of the fingers position. This was done by cutting a straight 1/2" piece of metal paper clip and inserting the sharp end into the tip of the finger using needle-nose pliers. The right trigger finger on this set of gloved hands had a very unnatural positioning, more like it should be pointing instead of trigger-ready or on-trigger. With the metal insert the fingers position can now be corrected as desired. As for the left hand in this set of gloved hands it also looked too stiff and "Kung-Fu grip fakey". Along with the insert in the forefinger a hobby knife was used to cut between and separate the other fingers allowing them to stagger in a natural way. This subtle modification made a huge difference in the over all look of the figure.

Boots: DML Navy SEAL "Rick"

Tactical Shotgun: DML Navy SEAL "Rick" shotgun. Customized/modified. The rear stock was removed. The barrel was removed from the receiver and both ends were shortened then reattached. The tactical flashlight was also shortened slightly. A functioning flash light lens cover was made out of heat shrink tubing and a lens cap off of a bbi aimpoint scope. The shotgun was also painted Tamyia Matte Black. The bbi 5 shot shell side mount was glued to the right side. A lanyard ring was added to the bottom of the pistol grip using a small piece of paper clip folded in half around another paper clip. This forms a ring with about 1/2 inch of straight portion that gets inserted into the drilled out hole in the bottom of the grip. The fit is nice and tight. The ring was then painted black. A custom web lanyard made out of 1/8" webbing and various bbi die cast hook and rings from a F-18 pilot vest. The Shotgun lanyard attaches to the vests left shoulder utility loop with a DML carabineer painted black and weathered with silver paint.

Black Bungee Cord: Used for securing the shotgun to the right side of the figure. Custom made from a black stretch hair band for the cord. The hooks were fabricated from pieces of a metal paper clip bent into shape using neddle nose pliers. To control the size of the hook coil, a small nail was used as guide to wrap the metal paper clip around. After the coil was formed it was removed from the nail and the hook portion was formed. The hooks were then slipped onto the cord and a small knot was made at each ends of the cord to keep hooks on. Hooks were painted with Tamiya Matte black enamel spray paint.

M4: DML M4 painted Matte Black with added bbi OD cloth from the EF series. The barrel was shortened and DML suppressor attached. A bbi PJ "Bones" M4 carry handle was cut down to the rear sight and painted flat black. The DML Reflex sight has been repainted black with added decal. The mag pull and Millennium Vertical Foregrip are bbi. The cheek rest on the rear folding stock is a modified Intoyz SIG 551 version painted black.
